How to Use WoodCast
With just a few simple steps, you can create beautiful, detailed castings that look like real wood.
- Acetone (nail polish remover works great)
- Small paper or glass container
- 6 or 9 mil nitrile gloves
- N95 dust mask
- Fan or a well-ventilated workspace
- Work in a well-ventilated area and use a fan for good airflow.
- Put on your gloves and dust mask.
- Pour about 1 ounce of acetone into a small paper or glass container.
- This acetone will be used to keep the WoodCast soft and pliable while you work.
Choose the Amy Howard at Home mould you will use for your casting.
- Open your WoodCast can and remove a small amount of material.
- Place the WoodCast into the container with acetone to keep it soft and workable.
- Seal the plastic bag inside the can after each use to keep the remaining WoodCast fresh.
- Start placing small amounts of WoodCast into your mould.
- Press the WoodCast into all details and corners of the mould.
- Use additional acetone as needed to keep the material pliable.
- Continue adding WoodCast until the mould is completely filled.
- As you reach the top, use a small amount of acetone and your finger to smooth the surface level.
- Most castings will dry in 4–5 hours.
- Deeper moulds may need to dry overnight.
- Once dry, gently bend the mould away from the edges of the casting.
- Carefully pull the WoodCast out until it releases completely.
- Use an X-Acto knife to carefully trim away any excess material if needed.
- Use quick-set wood glue for wood surfaces.
- Use a quick-set glue designed for other materials when attaching to non-wood surfaces.
- Place the finished cast in the microwave for 30 seconds.
- The cast will become flexible and ready to bend around curved surfaces.
- Bend gently, as the cast will only flex so far before it can snap.
- Use a rag with a small amount of acetone to wipe away any leftover WoodCast.
- Your mould is now ready for your next project!

FAQ's
Clay shrinks, cracks, and cannot be sanded or carved realistically once dry. WoodCast™ is true wood fiber — it behaves exactly like wood and gives you architectural-quality detail without the fragility or inconsistency of clay.
Acrylic resin cures into a hard plastic, which cannot be sanded, carved, stained, or bent once cured.
WoodCast is not plastic.
- It sands like wood
- It carves like wood
- It stains like wood
- It paints like wood
- It can be warmed and shaped
- It bonds seamlessly to wood surfaces
It is the closest thing to authentic carved wood you can make in a mold.
To keep WoodCast fresh, pliable, and easy to use, it must be stored in an airtight container. Always seal the lid tightly after each use and avoid leaving it exposed to air for long periods. Exposure to air will cause the product to dry out and lose workability.
For ideal storage:
- Keep the container sealed tightly
- Store in a cool, dry place
- Avoid extreme temperatures or direct sunlight
Revive it by misting it with acetone (never water). Blend well until it becomes soft and pliable again before pressing into your mold.
Use wood glue or super glue depending on the surface. After applying glue to the back of your appliqué, tape it in place while it dries to secure a perfect, seamless fit onto your piece.
WoodCast is designed for decorative castings and minor cosmetic repairs, not for full structural reconstruction. While it can fill small chips, dents, and surface imperfections, it is not a wood filler or structural repair product.
WoodCast works best for creating raised embellishments, appliqués, moulded details, trim accents, and ornamental repairs that add character and dimension to furniture and decor. For major broken areas, load-bearing repairs, or rebuilding missing sections of furniture, we recommend completing those structural fixes first, then using WoodCast to add decorative detail and finish work.
Yes — beautifully.
After drying your appliqué overnight:
- Place it in the microwave for 30 seconds.
- Remove carefully — it will be warm and flexible.
- Shape it around curved surfaces such as legs, frames, and moldings.
- Apply glue to the back and tape it securely until fully bonded.
This is one of WoodCast’s greatest advantages over resin or clay.

Absolutely. You can carve additional detail, refine lines, and create deeper cuts just like you would with wood.
Yes — beautifully. Because it is true wood fiber, it absorbs stain naturally for a rich, authentic finish.
Yes.If you are lacquering your appliqué, prime it first, as WoodCast™ absorbs paint like raw wood.
- Overnight is ideal for maximum hardness.
In a hurry? Let it dry 2–4 hours, gently demold, and finish drying flat.
No. WoodCast™ does NOT shrink in the mold, unlike many clays.
No — WoodCast™ releases easily from high-quality silicone molds.
Yes. Use a craft knife, utility knife, or small saw. It cuts like soft wood.
WoodCast is formulated to look, feel, and behave like real wood. Because of this, it is not recommended for long-term outdoor use. Just like natural wood, WoodCast can absorb moisture, swell, or eventually rot when exposed to the elements. If you choose to use it outdoors, be sure to seal it thoroughly with an exterior-grade sealer and avoid placing it in areas with direct weather exposure.
Absolutely. WoodCast™ is extremely forgiving and perfect for:

- DIYers
- Interior decorators
- Mixed media artists
- Anyone wanting architectural-quality detail at home
- Sandpaper (120–320 grit)
- Carving tools
- Utility knives
- Dremel tools
- Fine files and sculpting tools
