How To Use It
Step One
Clean your surface
Start by cleaning your piece thoroughly with Clean Slate to remove any wax, oil, or residue. This ensures proper adhesion and a smooth finish.
Step two
Apply One Step Paint
Use a high-quality brush to apply your first coat of paint. Let dry fully between coats. Most surfaces only need 1–2 coats for full coverage.
Step three
Customize your finish
Leave it matte, distress with sandpaper, or layer with other Amy Howard finishes like Cracked Painta, Dust of Ages, or waxes for a vintage or aged effect.
Step four
Seal (optional)
One Step Paint doesn’t require a topcoat, but you can apply Light Wax or Matte Sealer for added protection and character depending on the look you want.

A Velvet Wash Furniture Finish Inspired by Old-World Limewash
Transform your furniture with layered color and soft movement using One Step Paint. This Velvet Wash finish draws inspiration from the tonal depth of velvet fabric and the organic variation found in European limewashed walls—creating a romantic, elevated look that enhances ornate pieces without overwhelming them.
Created by @brasswalnut, this dresser makeover blends Windsor, Java, and touches of Black using a wet-on-wet technique with a round brush and misting bottle. The colors melt together seamlessly, building shadow, dimension, and that signature velvety softness. A final coat of Matte Sealer preserves the chalky appearance while protecting the finish for everyday use.
Whether you’re after a limewashed furniture look, a softly blended paint finish, or a statement piece rich in texture and character, the Velvet Wash technique shows just how versatile One Step Paint can be.

Amy’s Best-Selling Classic Finish from the Amy Howard Furniture Collection
Inspired by 18th- and 19th-century European antiques, Amy’s Classic Premier Finish captures the depth, texture, and artistry of true old-world furniture. Developed by Amy Howard over decades of furniture design, this signature look recreates the naturally layered beauty found on historic pieces—where paint, patina, and gilding evolved over time.
This timeless finish combines cracked texture, softly worn edges, and hand-applied gold leaf accents to strike a balance between elegance and age. Subtle distressing and antiquing waxes settle into the surface, creating shadow and dimension that make each piece feel collected rather than newly made.
Created using One Step Paint, Cracked Patina, gilding, and finishing waxes, the Classic Premier Finish transforms architectural furniture—like dressers, cabinets, beds, and benches—into statement heirlooms. Traditionally created with a black base, the look can also be customized with other colors to suit everything from formal European interiors to layered, transitional homes.

One Step Paint FAQ
One Step Paint is a chalk-style, calcium-carbonate paint designed to create antique beauty without stripping, sanding, priming, or sealing. Simply clean your surface, apply the paint, and let it dry. It delivers rich color and a flat matte finish that can be left as-is or layered with waxes, glazes, milk paint, or specialty finishes.
One Step Paint adheres beautifully to a wide variety of surfaces including wood, laminate, melamine, Formica, glass, resin, concrete, iron, stone, and previously painted furniture. It’s also suitable for outdoor furniture and décor when properly sealed for exterior use.
Yes—One Step Paint is the only Amy Howard at Home paint formulated for upholstery and fabric. Find tutorials on our blog or on our YouTube channel.
Sealing is not required for decorative pieces, but for furniture that will receive daily use—such as tables, chairs, cabinets, or upholstery—we recommend sealing with wax or another appropriate topcoat to protect the finish and extend durability.
One Step Paint contains essential oils, giving it a pleasant, low-odor scent compared to traditional paints. This makes it more enjoyable to use indoors and in smaller spaces.
Yes. One Step Paint is a water-based, low-VOC decorative paint, making it a more environmentally friendly choice for home DIY projects and indoor furniture refinishing.
Surface prep is simple—just clean thoroughly with a degreaser like Clean Slate to remove dirt, oils, or residue. No stripping, sanding, or priming is required in most cases unless repairing damage or creating a distressed finish.
One Step Paint is incredibly versatile and is often used as a base layer for milk paint finishes, waxed surfaces, stenciling, glazing, cracked patina looks, gilding, and layered Old-World furniture techniques. It’s ideal for creating everything from subtle patina to dramatic heirloom-style pieces.
While both are easy-to-use, all-in-one paints, they’re designed for different finishes and surfaces.
One Step Paint offers a flat matte, chalky finish ideal for vintage and distressed looks. It’s great for furniture, décor, and even upholstery (the only paint in our line safe for fabric). It's best when you want to layer, wax, or create a more aged, textured appearance.
Miracle Paint, on the other hand, dries to a smooth, satin finish that’s self-sealing and ultra-durable—perfect for high-traffic surfaces like cabinets, doors, and countertops. It’s self-leveling and designed to minimize brush strokes, making it ideal for a sleek, modern look that holds up beautifully over time.
