How to Apply Wallpaper
Preparing the surface is crucial for a smooth application of wallpaper.
What to Do:
- Remove any nails, screws, or electrical covers.
- Fill any holes or imperfections with spackle and smooth it out with a putty knife.
- Lightly sand any rough areas to create a smooth, even surface.
- Clean the wall thoroughly with a damp sponge and let it dry completely.
💡 Tip: Freshly painted walls should be given at least 4 weeks to dry before wallpapering.
Accurate measurements ensure your wallpaper panels fit perfectly.
What to Do:
- Measure the height of your wall from the baseboard to the ceiling.
- Mark this height on your wallpaper roll, adding 2–3 extra inches for trimming at the top and bottom.
- Cut your first wallpaper panel based on the measurements.
💡 Tip: For walls with a pattern, ensure the pattern is aligned correctly when measuring and cutting.
This will ensure your wallpaper hangs straight, not crooked.
What to Do:
- Use a level or a plumb line to mark a vertical line on the wall, starting at your chosen spot.
- This line will guide your first wallpaper panel.
💡 Tip: Never assume the corner is perfectly vertical, use the level for accuracy.
Wallpaper paste is essential for good adhesion.
What to Do:
- Use a paint roller or brush to apply a thin, even coat of wallpaper paste directly onto the wall (not on the wallpaper).
- Work in small sections, covering about 3–4 feet at a time.
💡 Tip: Avoid applying too much paste, as excess can cause bubbling or uneven adhesion.
The first panel sets the tone for the rest.
What to Do:
- Start at the top of your wall, aligning the first panel with the vertical line you marked earlier.
- Gently press the wallpaper against the wall and smooth out any bubbles using a wallpaper smoothing tool or a soft cloth.
- Continue smoothing from the center outwards.
💡 Tip: Leave a little extra paper at the top and bottom for trimming.
Make sure the seams are aligned for a seamless look.
What to Do:
- For the next panel, apply paste to the wall and carefully match the pattern to the first panel.
- Hang the next panel, smoothing out any bubbles as you go.
Repeat for each subsequent panel, ensuring each one aligns properly with the previous.
💡 Tip: Butt the edges of the panels together tightly, but don’t overlap them.
Once the wallpaper is in place, it’s time to trim the edges.
What to Do:
- Use a straight edge or ruler to guide your utility knife and trim the excess wallpaper at the top and bottom of the wall.
- Make sure to trim neatly along the ceiling and baseboard for a clean finish.
💡 Tip: Trim carefully and follow the edge to avoid cutting into the wallpaper on the wall.
Cleaning up ensures your wallpaper remains pristine.
What to Do:
- Wipe away any paste that has oozed out from the seams with a damp cloth.
- Allow the wallpaper to dry for at least 24 hours before touching or hanging anything on it.
💡 Tip: Don’t rush—let the wallpaper set and dry fully to avoid peeling or damage.
Now that your wallpaper is up, step back and admire your work.
- Your room is transformed with gorgeous, timeless wallpaper that pairs beautifully with Amy Howard at Home’s Manor Borne paints.

Wallpaper FAQ
Our premium wallpaper is printed on high-quality, durable paper with a matte finish and rich, saturated color. It is not peel-and-stick. Each design is intended for traditional paste-the-wall application, which provides a smooth, professional finish that lasts for years. Simply apply adhesive to the wall and hang each panel in sequence.
No. Our wallpaper is a traditional, paste-the-wall application. This method is preferred by designers because it creates a seamless, elevated finish and is more durable long-term than peel-and-stick products.
You can apply our wallpaper to most smooth, clean, properly prepared walls, including painted drywall, primed plaster, and paneled surfaces. For best results, the wall should be free of texture, bumps, or debris.
Proper prep ensures a flawless result. Remove nails and switch plates, fill any holes, lightly sand to smooth imperfections, and clean thoroughly with a damp sponge. Walls should be fully dry before application. Freshly painted walls need at least four weeks to cure before wallpapering.
We recommend a high-quality, clear, pre-mixed wallpaper adhesive suitable for traditional paper wallpapers. Avoid peel-and-stick adhesives or heavy vinyl pastes. Always follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.
Yes. While our wallpaper is designer-grade and richly detailed, it is approachable for first-time DIYers. Expect a multi-step, detail-oriented process. Many customers enjoy completing it themselves, but you can also hire a professional installer if desired.
