DIY Elegant Fall Pumpkins with Venetian Plaster

, by Ryan Casuga, 5 min reading time

Fall is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than by creating beautiful, textured pumpkins that add elegance to your seasonal decor?

In this tutorial, Leah Cook from Sandpaper and Wax Design shows us how to use Venetian Plaster and simple household materials to transform faux pumpkins into stunning centerpieces.

Whether you're new to DIY or a seasoned crafter, this project is easy, fun, and safe for everyone. Plus, it's a great way to avoid using harmful store-bought clays and opt for a homemade, non-toxic alternative!

Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating your own pipe-able Venetian Plaster pumpkins.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Venetian Plaster
  • Clean Slate
  • Ballet White One-Step Paint
  • Elmer’s Glue (or any safe, non-toxic glue)
  • Faux pumpkins (found at local craft stores like Walmart)
  • Disposable or reusable piping bags
  • Rubber bands
  • Tall jar for holding the piping bag while you fill it
  • Hand mixer or spoon for mixing
  • Scissors and spatula
  • Optional: Mica Powder or Glazed Over to add color to your plaster
  • Optional: Paint brushes for additional detail

Step 1: Create Your Pipe-able Venetian Plaster Mix

The magic of this project starts with mixing Venetian Plaster and glue to create a thick, pipe-able paste. Here's how:

  1. Start with water: In a mixing bowl, add 1/2 cup of water.
  2. Add Venetian Plaster: Mix in 1/2 cup of Venetian Plaster. Stir well until the plaster and water are fully combined.
  3. Blend with a hand mixer: To ensure a smooth consistency, use a hand mixer to whip the mixture. This helps eliminate lumps and makes it easier to work with.
  4. Add glue: Now, add 1/2 cup of Elmer's Glue to the mix. Stir thoroughly until the plaster and glue are fully incorporated. If the mixture feels too thin or runny, slowly add more Venetian Plaster, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach a thick, pipe-able consistency.

Step 2: Prepare Your Piping Bag

Once your mixture is ready, it's time to load it into a piping bag.

  1. Cut the tip of the bag: Using scissors, cut the tip of the piping bag to fit the size of your piping nozzle.
  2. Insert the nozzle: Secure the nozzle into the bag, ensuring it fits snugly.
  3. Place the bag in a jar: Place the piping bag inside a tall jar, folding the edges of the bag over the rim of the jar to keep it open. This makes filling the bag easier and prevents messes.
  4. Fill the bag: Use a spatula to scoop your Venetian Plaster mixture into the piping bag. Once filled, twist the top and secure it with a rubber band to prevent the mixture from spilling out.

Step 3: Prep Your Pumpkins with Clean Slate

Before you start decorating, it’s essential to clean your pumpkins to ensure the plaster adheres properly.

  1. Clean with Clean Slate: Apply Clean Slate to your faux pumpkins to remove any dirt, oils, or residue. This ensures the Venetian Plaster sticks well to the surface.
  2. Let it dry: Allow the pumpkins to dry for a few minutes before proceeding.

Step 4: Paint Your Pumpkins

For a beautifully smooth base, Leah suggests painting the pumpkins with Ballet White One-Step Paint

  1. Apply the first coat: Using a paintbrush, apply a thin coat of Ballet White One-Step Paint to the pumpkin.
  2. Let it dry: Allow the paint to dry completely before applying a second coat.
  3. Apply additional coats: Depending on the material of your pumpkin, you may need two or three coats of paint for full coverage.

Step 5: Start Piping Your Design

Now comes the fun part—piping the Venetian Plaster onto your pumpkin!

  1. Plan your design: Before you start, sketch out your design. You can create swirls, flowers, or any pattern that inspires you.
  2. Pipe the plaster: Steadily pipe the Venetian Plaster onto your pumpkin, following your sketched design. Take your time and enjoy the process—this is where your creativity shines!
  3. Smooth and sculpt: If you want to add additional texture or detail, use a paintbrush or your fingers to smooth or shape the plaster.

Step 6: Let It Dry & Add Optional Lacquer

Once you’ve finished piping, allow the plaster to dry completely. This could take up to 48 hours, depending on the thickness of your design and the humidity levels in your area.

  1. Optional: Apply lacquer: For an extra glossy finish, consider applying Amy Howard Lacquer once the plaster has dried. Just ensure the plaster has cured fully to avoid cracking.

Step 7: Add Color and Finishing Touches

If you want to take your pumpkins to the next level, you can add some color!

  1. Add Mica Powder: For a shimmering effect, mix Mica Powder into the plaster before applying it, or dust it onto the dried design.
  2. Add paint details: You can also use acrylic paints to add color to the leaves, stems, or other accents on your pumpkin.

Step 8: Display Your Elegant Fall Pumpkins

Once everything is dry, your pumpkins are ready to be displayed! Place them on your mantel, dining table, or any cozy corner of your home for a beautiful autumn touch.

This DIY Venetian Plaster project is perfect for fall and is a fun way to create something truly unique.

Best of all, it’s a safe, non-toxic alternative to other clays, making it perfect for a crafting night with friends or family.

Happy crafting! 🍂
