DIY No-Sew Holiday Placemats

, by Ryan Casuga, 2 min reading time

The holidays are right around the corner, and nothing adds a personal touch like handmade décor!

In this tutorial, Leah Cook from Sandpaper and Wax Design teaches us how to make beautiful, no-sew placemats that will elevate your festive table.

Perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any holiday gathering, these placemats can be customized to fit your theme and style, and they’re fun to make with the family!

Materials You'll Need:

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Fabric:

    • Soak your duck canvas in water until it’s fully saturated.
    • Create a paint bath using Amy Howard One Step Paint. Let your fabric sit in the bath for a few minutes, then gently squeeze out the excess paint and let it dry.
    • Once dry, wash the fabric in cool water and dry on a low temperature. Be sure to clean up the edges.

  2. Cut and Measure:

    • Decide on the size of your placemats. Standard size is 18 x 12 inches, but you can adjust based on your table.
    • Measure and cut the fabric to the desired dimensions, allowing extra room for hemming.

  3. No-Sew Hem:

    • Fold the edges of the fabric and use Ultra Bond Adhesive Tape to secure the hem. Iron the folded edges to activate the adhesive.

  4. Stencil the Design:

    • Choose your Amy Howard Stencils and place it on the placemat. Use Amy Howard Gel Art Ink and her specialized squeegee to apply the ink smoothly.
    • You can mix Gel Art Ink colors to create custom shades. Let the ink dry completely.

  5. Seal the Ink:

    • After the ink dries, set it with a warm, non-steam iron to ensure the design stays intact, even after washing.

  6. Optional: Add Embellishments

    • If desired, add lace or other trims to the placemat using fabric glue or additional adhesive tape.

These no-sew placemats make a fantastic addition to your holiday table, and the best part is that you can easily wash and reuse them!
