Midnight Dreams is our deepest shade of blue; a rich, dark oasis of navy color.
About One Step Paint
One Step Paint is our premium, water-based chalk-style paint that transforms furniture, fabric, and everything in between. No stripping, no sanding, no priming. It dries to a soft, chalky matte finish that's perfect for vintage, distressed, layered, and Old World looks. While decorative pieces don't require sealing, we recommend adding a wax or sealer on high-use items like dining tables, chairs, and cabinets to protect against everyday wear.
Remove and mark any hardware from your piece. Clean thoroughly with Clean Slate to remove all dirt, wax, silicone, furniture polish, oils, and grease. Repair any cracks or holes with wood filler. A clean surface allows One Step Paint to bond properly and creates a longer-lasting finish.
Allow approximately 1 hour of dry time between coats. Once your final coat is dry, your piece is ready to enjoy as-is with its soft, chalky matte finish, or protect it further with Matte Sealer, Light Wax, or Dark Wax.
One Step Paint works beautifully on wood, cabinetry, laminate, melamine, Formica, glass, resin, concrete, metal, stone, and previously painted furniture. It's also the only Amy Howard At Home paint suitable for fabric and upholstery.

One Step Paint is a chalk-style, calcium-carbonate paint designed to create antique beauty without stripping, sanding, priming, or sealing. Simply clean your surface, apply the paint, and let it dry. It delivers rich color and a flat matte finish that can be left as-is or layered with waxes, glazes, milk paint, or specialty finishes.
One Step Paint adheres beautifully to a wide variety of surfaces including wood, laminate, melamine, Formica, glass, resin, concrete, iron, stone, and previously painted furniture. It’s also suitable for outdoor furniture and décor when properly sealed for exterior use.
Yes—One Step Paint is the only Amy Howard at Home paint formulated for upholstery and fabric. Find tutorials on our blog or on our YouTube channel.
Sealing is not required for decorative pieces, but for furniture that will receive daily use—such as tables, chairs, cabinets, or upholstery—we recommend sealing with wax or another appropriate topcoat to protect the finish and extend durability.
One Step Paint contains essential oils, giving it a pleasant, low-odor scent compared to traditional paints. This makes it more enjoyable to use indoors and in smaller spaces.
Yes. One Step Paint is a water-based, low-VOC decorative paint, making it a more environmentally friendly choice for home DIY projects and indoor furniture refinishing.
Surface prep is simple—just clean thoroughly with a degreaser like Clean Slate to remove dirt, oils, or residue. No stripping, sanding, or priming is required in most cases unless repairing damage or creating a distressed finish.
One Step Paint is incredibly versatile and is often used as a base layer for milk paint finishes, waxed surfaces, stenciling, glazing, cracked patina looks, gilding, and layered Old-World furniture techniques. It’s ideal for creating everything from subtle patina to dramatic heirloom-style pieces.
While both are easy-to-use, all-in-one paints, they’re designed for different finishes and surfaces.
One Step Paint offers a flat matte, chalky finish ideal for vintage and distressed looks. It’s great for furniture, décor, and even upholstery (the only paint in our line safe for fabric). It's best when you want to layer, wax, or create a more aged, textured appearance.
Miracle Paint, on the other hand, dries to a smooth, satin finish that’s self-sealing and ultra-durable—perfect for high-traffic surfaces like cabinets, doors, and countertops. It’s self-leveling and designed to minimize brush strokes, making it ideal for a sleek, modern look that holds up beautifully over time.

I saw this brand on YouTube because I was looking for an alternative to spraying cabinetry. With a foam roller I was able to achieve a rich beautiful and smooth deep blue finish. It looks professionally done, and I’m no expert. I really love the look and durability of this paint. I will definitely purchase the one step paint again when we decide to do our walk in closets.

Love this color. Such a great dark classic blue. I used it on this table base and received so many compliments. Now I keep a large can of it on hand as a staple color.

I am not a DIY or crafty person. When we moved into a rental house, while our new home is being built, we needed a bar. I decided to use my Dad’s old computer desk/hutch. It was a very ornate wood piece. Since it is just a temporary fix, as our new home will have a built in bar, I decided to try to update it with some paint and new knobs. I did research and the reviews for the One Step paint made me think I could do this on my own. So, I bought the paint and did it! It was so easy! I ordered a couple of sample colors first to find the right color. I decided on Midnight Dreams. I gave it two coats. It goes on so easy and I just love the finished result. I may actually try to find a spot for it, in our new home! It makes me want to paint something else!

I absolutely love this color. I painted this old peace which had already been very badly painted. I did not have to strip the old paint simply thoroughly clean it and paint. I'm loving my new sideboard!

I love this color. I had to apply 3 coats to get the rich finish. I wanted the chalk look so I skip the wax.

I used this paint on a board along with another one to see which color I liked best to use on a cabinet. They were both super pretty, but I accidently scratched with my fingernail on the board with Midnight Dreams (I was carrying the board to another room) and the paint came right off. I was really surprised to see that happen. Scratched a bit with my fingernail on the other color, Cartouche Green, and the same thing happened. Here's my question for those of you who might know the answer. If I paint a desk or whatever and someone hits it with a chair, how do I keep this paint from scratching. Any ideas?

The paint went on wonderfully. There was no awful odor. I have ordered it twice to finish my cabinets. I love it.

It is a very beautiful Deep blue once it drys, the only issue I have is, it goes on a little oil base. I was expecting a milk paint type finish. But over all I will buy it again:)

This one step went on smooth and dried so quickly. I have used a lot of different one coat paints and this was the easiest to get smooth and also dried fast. Will definitely be one of my top paints!

Just used this today on a buffet that is 100 years old. I cleaned it but did not sand. This paint is amazing! It smells good. Goes on perfectly, used a small sponge roller. It dries quick! I have already waxed most of it. I am so happy. Was not sure I wanted to keep this buffet but now I sure do! No pictures yet because I have not put the doors back on or the drawers back in. Will wait til overnight. The color is insane! I thought I was getting an almost black gray but it is actually a very deep navy. I love it. It doesn’t look like it used to so I’m happy

The Prayer Board on the upper right is painted with Midnight Dreams One Step Paint. I love this color! It dries dark, but rich. It isnt just navy blue. It is something warm and magical. This is the first Prayer Board I sold! Because of the color! Yup!

Like the color but thought it would be darker. I added black which made it look more navy. Love Amy Howard products!

Although it was a lot of work initially, it was worth it! This was my first experience using chalk paint. I selected Amy Howard's chalk paint because, after watching a lot of videos online, it seemed to be the strongest. The surfaces that I am painting will need to hold up to my grandchildren! So far, I love it. I found it easier to use the clear wax paint on it by letting it set for 30 minutes then using a hair dryer on medium heat, heat it then buff it into the wood. It created a beautiful shine! I also buffed it as I would my shoes, by spritzing it with water at I buffed. To get a smooth look, without brush marks, I would apply the paint with a soft paint brush then spritz the paint I applied with water and continue to spread it, feathering it on the edges into the already applied paint, if there was a section before it. I made sure that each edge was as thin as possible. I made each application of paint very thin, in general, and applied up it to my sofa table up to seven times. Again, this was to ensure absolutely NO brush marks appeared! THIS TECHNIQUE WORKED! Amy Howard is now my go-to place for chalk paint!

I would post a picture but the piece isn't finished. I am in the middle of refurbishing a bureau. The color is perfect. Easy to use. One can took care of a 9 drawer, 2 door bureau. I had to use two coats because the bureau was in rough shape. It's looking great. Can't wait to start my next project!

Tried the OneStep paint and loved how it looks on my stool. The paint dries to a matte finish and I didn’t have to sand or prime the furniture! I would definitely purchase again.

Love how this turned out! I used Midnight Dreams mixed with a little black to make it a darker blue. Finished with three coats.

This was my first time using this paint and first time painting any type of furniture. I love this color and how my shoe cabinets came out. I used a foam roller so didn’t get any brush strokes. So happy with how it came out and the pop of color it gave to my room.
