Follow these simple steps to apply wax and Dust of Ages for a beautifully timeworn finish. It is ideal for furniture, molding, frames, and decorative accents.
Apply One Step Paint™ or Toscana Milk Paint™ and allow it to fully dry.
Apply the Wax of your choice to protect the finish and create a surface for the dust to cling to.
While the wax is slightly tacky, brush Dust of Ages over the entire piece—letting it fall naturally into cracks, carvings, and recessed areas.
After the wax sets, gently buff back the dust using a brush or soft cloth to reveal beautifully aged dimension.
The remaining dust enhances carvings, texture, and character for a timeworn finish that looks centuries old.
Amy's Tip: Allow your wax to come to tack (slightly sticky) before applying Dust of Ages. This ensures the powder settles naturally into carvings and crevices—just like real aging.
Watch ordinary painted surfaces transform as Dust of Ages settles into carvings, moldings, and recessed areas—bringing out depth, contrast, and character you won’t achieve with paint alone. Whether you’re refinishing a dresser, aging a decorative frame, or updating cabinets, Dust of Ages turns simple pieces into antique-inspired works of art.
Not all aging powders or patina products are created equal. Dust of Ages was intentionally formulated to replicate the natural buildup of timeworn dust found on centuries-old furniture, gilded frames, and architectural details. Instead of looking artificial or “crafty,” it settles with a softness and texture that mirrors true antique wear.
Settles into cracks and carvings to mimic the natural dust buildup found on century-old furniture.
Pairs perfectly with wax topcoats to create a soft, subtle sheen and a truly authentic aged patina.
Highlights moldings, trim, frames, and ornate textures with instant depth and dimension.
Transforms flat paint into a richly layered, time-worn finish in just minutes.
Never looks fake or overly distressed—always soft, refined, and antique-inspired.
Trusted by furniture artists, DIYers, and restorers for museum-worthy finishes.
Dust of Ages is trusted by furniture painters, DIY refinishers, antique restorers, and professional decorative artists for its unmatched ability to replicate authentic age.
Dust of Ages is a fine antiquing powder that settles into cracks, carvings, and textured areas to replicate the natural dust buildup found on aged furniture. It instantly adds depth, patina, and authentic, timeworn character to painted surfaces.
Apply it over wax while the wax is still tacky. Brush Dust of Ages across carvings and recesses, then buff away the excess. It will remain beautifully settled in the details.
For best—and most authentic—results, yes. Wax creates tack, allowing Dust of Ages to settle naturally into low points and details, just like real aging.
Yes! It works beautifully over One Step Paint™, Toscana Milk Paint™, and most chalk-style or mineral paints.
Furniture, frames, moldings, cabinets, legs, trim, raised details, and decorative accents—anywhere texture or carvings exist.
No, it softens and highlights details without altering your paint color. You choose how dramatic the effect is by buffing or layering more.
If you used wax as your base, the finish is typically sealed enough.
For extra durability on high-touch surfaces like cabinets, buff with additional wax or add a layer of Matte Sealer after the patina cures.
Absolutely! This is one of the simplest ways to achieve a professional antique patina—even if it’s your first refinishing project.
This means the wax was still wet, not tacky. Allow wax to come to a lightly sticky feel before adding Dust of Ages to avoid color transformation.
Yes. If you're sensitive to airborne powders, consider wearing a dust mask or applying it outdoors.

I used Amy Howard clear wax and Dust Of Ages over metallic paints in layers of gold and copper. Amy’s technique of steel wool after the Dust of Ages brought out that super shine in the copper. I love how it turned out!

I used dust of ages on this old antique cupboard. It made it look completely different and really awesome. I love how it finished it.

I need to try this a few more times to get the hang of it. I know that it will be great to have and I’m happy I bought it. Can’t wait for my next attempt

I found this product to be very messy to work with and somewhat wasteful in order to get the best possible finished look. I think the same look can be achieved in other ways that are far less messy. Probably would not buy this product again.

While the Dark Wax is amazing at adding "age" to whatever you're working on, it's the Dust of Ages that brings things to the next level. If you want to create something that looks like it's been around for 100 years, don't skip this stuff.

I have not used it in a completed craft but I did use it on some flowers I made out of a mold and I absolutely love the look!

We used it on out theater set, as hand smudges on walls.

I fell in love with Amy Howard products. I have never used them before and I was building beds and decided to give them a try. And then everywhere I looked I saw other items that needed the dust of ages and wax. In a moment I had picture frames, some too new looking and some 1800’s poorly refinished frames, that went from, as Amy says “garish “, to fabulous; so rich and beautiful looking ! I have a lifetime of painting experience. These products take it to an amazing new level. Thank you!!

At first, I wondered why I tried to paint and seal my old concrete screened porch floor. I am 74 years old and thought it would be too much fir me. I found your products and techniques on line and ordered the dusting, glaze, and milk paint. I used the dusting and glaze - along with 3 coats of sealer. I am very pleased with the calm and serene look that most people think is tile. The tape provided the look of grout - today, I added my furniture back into my new favorite spot ‼️💕 Thank you, and I feel very pleased in my happy place. NW Oct 18, 2023

Dust of ages is so fun to work with, very versatile. I use it to add age and definition to mouldings, highlights texture to mixed media projects and so much more. It's a must have.

Fantastic for aging plaster castings, most of which I make from antique molds. Truly beautiful results, superior to anything else I've used before. Thank you. I'll never be without it

I worked in an Art Gallery as their in house designer for 15 years and everybody would joke that I preferred antiques “rusted and stone dusted”. Your product was just what I need for an aged look on frames for my artwork. Thank you so much

I adore redoing old frames. The dust of ages finishes off the frames and gives it the antique and historical vibe I love!

I love this step as a final touch. It does a great job of shining up the piece. This is a before and after photo collage, I would share on the before and after group but I am anti-Facebook, I was hoping it would be a page on the Amy Howard website. O'well I can share this way. This was an Ethan Allen dresser that my mom picked up in a furniture store in Philadelphia used in the early to mid 70's, so this could be a 1968-1972 Ethan Allen dresser. I have always loved this dresser and was excited when my Mom handed it down to me. It has been moved cross country 4-5 times so you can tell how banged up it was also the finish was almost practically removed just from time. This took me 8 months as I was working in-between semesters of my Master's program. I was able to apply the light, dark wax, then finally the dust of ages yesterday and put the hardware back on. I am so happy with how it turned out. I love this multi-layer antique finish, I will be doing this to the rest of my pieces. I have already scouted, lined up, and scheduled the next pieces of furniture I will be completely. Amy was right, this is highly addicting!! I hope you all find this inspiring. On to my next project..

This is a sample trim for a project, with OS black, the gold gilding kit and light antiquing wax, (which is what I had at the time) and Dust of ages. I absolutely LOVE DOA!!! It literally turns your piece into a fine piece of furniture!! All I want to do is find more projects to work on, so I can use it again!!
Shelley H. 5/5 Verified
wonderful but watch where you use it, it's a little messy.

This is my practice project. Love the consistency and ease of use. Much better than old school rotten stone. It gives any project just the right amount of “old”. Glad I decided to add it to the tool kit.

Dust of Ages is one of my favorite products!! It's so exciting to the see the transformation when you begin polishing. I bought this piece on Facebook Marketplace and used Amy Howard Light and Dark Wax and Dust of Ages to tone down the color of the stain around the carving, and it was the perfect solution.

I have not used it yet, but I’m sure it will perform as expected. However, I am disappointed that the jar I received looks used. It was not sealed and the top is dented and dirty. I thought of sending it back, but didn’t want to go through the hassle.

Dust of Ages really gave a beautiful antique effect to my piece after painting in OS Black.
