To give this finish its warm foundation, start with raw wood and apply English Walnut Gel Stain using a chip brush. Use a lint-free cloth to buff off any excess stain. If you are working with a surface that has already been stained or finished, sand it first to prepare it for paint, then apply a coat of One Step Paint or use Milk Paint Binder before moving on to the next step.

To create the base layer for this finish, combine one part Strasbourg White Milk Paint, one part Venetian Plaster, and one part water. Mix well and keep the consistency relatively thick.

Using a brush, apply the milk paint and plaster mixture to your surface, making sure you achieve full coverage. Allow it to dry completely before moving to the next step.

To build the aged gray layer, mix one part Scandinavian Grey Milk Paint with one part water. This mixture should be quite watery.

Apply the gray milk paint over your dried base, keeping the coverage uneven. Variation in darkness and lightness is exactly what gives this finish its aged character. Use a cloth to move and blend the paint as you go, then reinforce the crevices with an artist brush and buff off any excess.

To bring in that authentic aged detail, dip your brush into the Scandinavian Grey Milk Paint and offload the excess. Pull the bristles back and release them to flick fine speckles of paint across the surface. A little goes a long way here, so avoid overdoing it. Once you are happy with the effect, use a lint-free cloth to dab and soften the speckles.

To brighten the surface and add contrast, lightly apply the Strasbourg White mixture over your piece. Once it begins to dry, sand the white areas and dust off the excess. This is where the layered, crusty texture really starts to come through.

Using a brush, apply Matte Sealer over the entire surface and allow it to dry thoroughly before moving on.

Carefully apply Light Wax over your piece, taking care not to let it dry completely before you move to the next step.

While your wax is still workable, spread Dust of Ages over the surface, making sure it settles into every crevice and detail. Lightly wipe off some of the excess without buffing, so the aged pigment stays soft and layered into the finish. Enjoy the bragging rights. You have absolutely earned them.
