Today on How To Friday, Gene shows you how to repair veneer! Don't look past those piece of furniture that need a little extra love, we'll teach you what you need to know.  

*Note that this process works best on a piece that will be painted, not stained*

Take these steps to repair veneer:

1. Start by removing any hardware on the piece
2. Clean the piece with Clean Slate and a lint-free rag
3. Next we are going to repair the loose veneer. You can use wood glue or a quick dry gel glue. Be careful as you do this because you don't want the veneer to pop off. To get deep into the crevices you can use a razor blade or syringe. Tape down the parts where you've applied glue to apply pressure. 
4. Next apply wood filler with a putty knife to the areas with chips. We like a putty knife because it helps with a smooth application. After that dries, you'll sand it with 220 grit sand paper. Repeat the process until the profile of the wood filler matches the trim of the piece. 
5. Remove the tape once your glue is dry. Then take a lint-free rag and dust off the piece. 
6. Now it's time to paint! Pick your favorite color from our One Step Paint line, paint the piece, and Enjoy The Bragging Rights!

Supplies (click below to shop): 

• Nightstand
• Clean Slate
• Cranley Garden - One Step Paint 
• Wedge Specialty Brush
• Painters’ Tape
• Lint Free Cloth

Instructions: 

1. Begin by cleaning the top and sides of the nightstand using a lint free cloth and Clean Slate. 

2. Then use the Wedge Specialty Brush to apply Cranley Garden One Step Paint, using nice long stokes and always painting into a wet edge.  Be sure to paint in the direction of the grain as well. 

3. Once dry apply a second coat of paint. 

4. Next, add painters’ tape to the front of the dresser at an angle.  If it crosses over a handle you can tape it off to paint partially as well. 

5. Then continue the angle below to any crossbars but also taping off the legs. Be sure to burnish the tape (rub firmly) so that the paint doesn’t leak underneath it. 

6. Use your cloth and Clean Slate again to wipe down the area you will be painting.

7. Then paint those areas using the same method as in steps 2-3.

8. Lastly, carefully remove the Painters’ Tape and allow paint to cure. 

9. Optional, you can seal using one of the Amy Howard At Home Waxes or Sealants if you would like for added protection, durability, and sheen, but it is not necessary. 

10. ENJOY THE BRAGGING RIGHTS!

 

Use tin cans to create these chic lanterns! Pick your favorite shades of One Step Paint and you have fun new decorative pieces. 

Supplies: 

• 3 Tin Cans (lids removed and washed)
• Clean Slate
• Peachy Keen - One Step Paint 
• Toscana Sage - One Step Paint 
• Geyer Gray - One Step Paint 
• Wedge Specialty Brush
• Lint Free Cloth
• Paper
• Marker
• Tape
• Hammer
• Nail(s)

Instructions: 

1. Begin by wiping the exterior of the cans using a lint-free cloth and Clean Slate. 
2. Next, fill with water and freeze overnight.  (note: if you don’t want to have to hammer the bottom then fill 1 inch at a time allowing it to freeze completely as you go) 
3. While you wait, draw or print off your design.  Then use your marker to make dots along the edges giving you a guide to follow when hammering. 
4. Next, once the water is completely frozen, wrap the tin in with your guide and tape it to hold in place.  
5. Begin making holes using a hammer and nail, careful not to hit your fingers.  You may want to do this step outside on top of a towel to prevent dinting the can. 
6. Once done and the can is all dry, firmly grasp the can and hammer the bottom back in if it has popped out from freezing. (Skip this step if you slowly froze the water to avoid this) 
7. Next use your Wedge Specialty Brush and One Step Paint to paint the exterior of the can. Use nice long strokes and always paint into a wet edge.  Don’t worry about clogging holes, you can go back later and poke through them using your nail. 
8. Careful when placing tea light candles in as the interior of the can may have sharp edges.
