Toscana Milk Paint - Capri Sand

Toscana Milk Paint is a powdered paint that mixes with water to create a creamy, easy to use finish. It's designed to give furniture and décor pieces an authentic, Old World patina with rich texture, layered depth, and soft color variation. Once applied, it dries to a velvety matte finish that must be sealed with wax for durability.

Milk Paint and Chalk Paint create two different looks. One Step Paint is our chalk-style paint, pre-mixed and ready to use straight from the can for a soft matte finish. Toscana Milk Paint is a powder you mix yourself, formulated to recreate the thin, variable, naturally aged patina of antique furniture, the kind of soft color variation and worn texture you simply can't get from a pre-mixed paint. Many of our customers use both together, One Step Paint as a base coat, Milk Paint layered on top for depth.

Start by cleaning your surface thoroughly with Clean Slate to remove any wax, oils, or residue. For raw wood, no priming is needed...just mix, strain, and paint. For finished or slick surfaces, apply One Step Paint or mix in the Toscana Milk Paint Binder before painting.

Toscana Milk Paint works best on raw, unfinished wood, ideal for furniture, cabinets, and frames. If you're painting over a previously finished surface like glass, metal, or painted furniture, first use One Step Paint as a base or add Milk Paint Binder to help it adhere. It's also a beautiful option for canvas and decorative accents.

Unmixed Milk Paint powder stores indefinitely when kept in an airtight, dry container, so you can mix only what you need for each project. Once mixed with water, use it within 1 to 2 weeks, stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Sealing is required for every Milk Paint project, since the finish is porous by nature. Lock it in with Light Wax, Dark Wax, or Matte Sealer. As a general rule, use Light Wax on about 80 to 100% of your piece and Dark Wax on only about 20%, applying it lightly and wiping away excess so it enhances rather than overwhelms the finish.

A single 12oz pouch of Toscana Milk Paint generally covers approximately 17 to 24 square feet, mixed at the standard 1:1 powder to water ratio. Coverage will vary depending on how thick you mix it and your color choice, lighter colors often need 2 to 3 coats for full opacity, while darker colors may only need 1 to 2.

Layering is where Milk Paint really shines. Try it over Cracked Gesso for texture, age it with Antiquing Glaze using a sea sponge for an authentic worn look, or layer multiple colors for depth. Keep your piece flat while painting and let each layer dry fully before moving to the next, and avoid the temptation to over-sand or over-age, the most authentic patina comes from thinking about where a piece would naturally wear over time.
