Calculation is based on one coat. Most paint projects require two coats for the best coverage.

A Good Man Is Hard to Find is our deepest shade of gray, and it's a beloved favorite among our customers.
About One Step Paint
One Step Paint is our premium, water-based chalk-style furniture paint that transforms furniture, fabric, and everything in between. No stripping, no sanding, no priming. It dries to a soft, chalky matte finish that's perfect for vintage, distressed, layered, and Old World looks. While decorative pieces don't require sealing, we recommend adding a wax or sealer on high-use items like dining tables, chairs, and cabinets to protect against everyday wear.
Remove and mark any hardware from your piece. Clean thoroughly with Clean Slate to remove all dirt, wax, silicone, furniture polish, oils, and grease. Repair any cracks or holes with wood filler. A clean surface allows One Step Paint to bond properly and creates a longer-lasting finish.
Allow approximately 1 hour of dry time between coats. Once your final coat is dry, your piece is ready to enjoy as-is with its soft, chalky matte finish, or protect it further with Matte Sealer, Light Wax, or Dark Wax.
One Step Paint works beautifully on wood, cabinetry, laminate, melamine, Formica, glass, resin, concrete, metal, stone, and previously painted furniture. It's also the only Amy Howard At Home paint suitable for fabric and upholstery.

One Step Paint is a chalk-style, calcium-carbonate paint designed to create antique beauty without stripping, sanding, priming, or sealing. Simply clean your surface, apply the paint, and let it dry. It delivers rich color and a flat matte finish that can be left as-is or layered with waxes, glazes, milk paint, or specialty finishes.
One Step Paint adheres beautifully to a wide variety of surfaces including wood, laminate, melamine, Formica, glass, resin, concrete, iron, stone, and previously painted furniture. It’s also suitable for outdoor furniture and décor when properly sealed for exterior use.
Yes—One Step Paint is the only Amy Howard at Home paint formulated for upholstery and fabric. Find tutorials on our blog or on our YouTube channel.
Sealing is not required for decorative pieces, but for furniture that will receive daily use—such as tables, chairs, cabinets, or upholstery—we recommend sealing with wax or another appropriate topcoat to protect the finish and extend durability.
One Step Paint contains essential oils, giving it a pleasant, low-odor scent compared to traditional paints. This makes it more enjoyable to use indoors and in smaller spaces.
Yes. One Step Paint is a water-based, low-VOC decorative paint, making it a more environmentally friendly choice for home DIY projects and indoor furniture refinishing.
Surface prep is simple—just clean thoroughly with a degreaser like Clean Slate to remove dirt, oils, or residue. No stripping, sanding, or priming is required in most cases unless repairing damage or creating a distressed finish.
One Step Paint is incredibly versatile and is often used as a base layer for milk paint finishes, waxed surfaces, stenciling, glazing, cracked patina looks, gilding, and layered Old-World furniture techniques. It’s ideal for creating everything from subtle patina to dramatic heirloom-style pieces.
While both are easy-to-use, all-in-one paints, they’re designed for different finishes and surfaces.
One Step Paint offers a flat matte, chalky finish ideal for vintage and distressed looks. It’s great for furniture, décor, and even upholstery (the only paint in our line safe for fabric). It's best when you want to layer, wax, or create a more aged, textured appearance.
Miracle Paint, on the other hand, dries to a smooth, satin finish that’s self-sealing and ultra-durable—perfect for high-traffic surfaces like cabinets, doors, and countertops. It’s self-leveling and designed to minimize brush strokes, making it ideal for a sleek, modern look that holds up beautifully over time.

One Step Paint | A Good Man is Hard to Find
Store owner replied: so glad you do thank you so much!
Great color! I haven’t used yet.

Ballet white base, good man, and luxe gray. 3 coats of white to cover the brown tile then veining with the grays. I used a satin Polyurethane (general finishes) to protect the floor. I Will probably poly twice a year.

I watched the marbleizing video about a million times before I decided to give it a try. So glad I did. Amy makes it so easy and the products are amazing. I did my kitchen and bathroom Formica countertops. They came out beautiful!

I love this one step paint!! It smells yummy and super easy to work with. I used A Good Man is Hard to Find for the base and I used the miracle paint for the top of piece and another grey color for the stencil. The stenciled area is tile and the miracle paint covered it beautifully! I LOVE Amy Howard’s products!!

I loved this color in the photo and even the dot in the can. But when I painted my dresser it was very blue. Not at all what it looked like from the swatch so I did not use for this project. Also, I felt like you had to work super fast or the paint would get clumpy. I figured out the method but took a little trial and error. Still, I would use again in a different color.

A good man is hard to find, gave me exactly what I was looking for, on this door panel, I am converting into a wall sconce, I am currently gold leafing the inside of the shade, as well as painting the shade black on the outside, then I will attach the sconce, and the French cleat for hanging, I am happy with all the products I've used, and cannot wait to start another project, I love your milk paint, and all the special effects products I have used so far. Thank you Amanda Villarreal

I used this AGMIHTF with luxe gray and Ballet white samples to marbleize a 32” tulip table top that was very porous and in need of help. I’m more than pleased with the quality and fun I had doing this. I posted pic under my Luxe Gray review.

Just painted a second piece today. Putting it in my husband’s office to store his small humidors. Really like the color and it truly is amazing, the coverage. This was a very beat up piece and it is miraculous it looks so good. Just wondering if for his office I might want to use a dark wax to protect and make it a bit more masculine and aged?

My first-time painting furniture and it turned out brilliant. Very happy with the quality and ease of this paint. I used light and dark wax applications after painting, and it gave it extra flair and character.

On this antique desk, I painted it A Good Man is Hard to Find. After drying well, I put on two coats of black gel stain and wiped off a good amount each time. I love the combination and wish I could have posted two pictures. This picture is good, but I have a picture of the top and it’s beautiful!

I waited to write my review on the One Step Paint until I got the hang of it. I ended up spraying A Good Man Is Hard To Find in One Step Paint after watching the video indicating the proper dilution rate. I painted a Demi Lune piece, and I can honestly say this is the best paint I've ever used, and believe me when I say, I've used them all!! Thank you Amy for creating such a beautiful product that does exactly what it says it will do! Next I will use the wax on the same piece to finish it up. Also, thank you Amy and Gene for the informative videos and information. GREAT PRODUCT!!

This is such a pretty grayish black color and I really loved it. I mixed it with Bauhaus Buff to create a couple shades of gray to use as scumbles on my countertop painting project. I bought the turkey feather - but I chickened out on the veining! The video was excellent but I didn't trust myself to put it on my counter on my first project. In the end, it didn't need it - it was really pretty as is.

I bought this color that year, paint my kitchen cabinets and LOVED how they turned out. After a year I needed to do some minor touch up on a few minor chips. I bought and can at our local Ace Hardware store.... it did NOT match. I was thinking it was Ace Hardware fault so I purchased a can from your web site, and this can does not match either. I’m sad and very frustrated..... I need some help please.

What a beautiful color. This line of paint adheres to furniture so well….I love it! I am leaving the other paint companies for Amy Howard’s products because they are easy to use, perform beautifully and are nicely pigmented.

A Good Man Is Hard To Find is a dark gray. It's rich and dense. I love it! The photo shows it as the background in this Prayer Board. The stencil is available from A Maker's Studio. You can purchase a kit to make the prayer board or just the stencil. I had a local carpenter make this frame for me. He copied the one I purchased from A Maker's Studio in the kit. If you make the Prayer Board, or for any project, I highly recommend this paint, and this color.

My wife and I painted the table, it was our first project and it was so easy . There was no bad smell from the paint and it went on really good and dried very fast! Thank you !!

Love the richness of this color. My husband built this couch table and we painted it "Good Man is Hard to Fine". Plays off the color of the couch beautifully.
