Lady Singing The Blues is our most beloved deep and gorgeous navy, perfect for adding a touch of sophistication to your décor.
About One Step Paint
One Step Paint is our premium, water-based chalk-style furniture paint that transforms furniture, fabric, and everything in between. No stripping, no sanding, no priming. It dries to a soft, chalky matte finish that's perfect for vintage, distressed, layered, and Old World looks. While decorative pieces don't require sealing, we recommend adding a wax or sealer on high-use items like dining tables, chairs, and cabinets to protect against everyday wear.
Clean thoroughly with Clean Slate to remove all dirt, wax, silicone, furniture polish, oils, and grease.
Using a brush, roller, or sprayer, apply your first thin, even coat of One Step Paint. Use long, clean strokes, painting with the grain, and avoid applying too much paint at once.
Allow the first coat to dry completely, about 1 hour, before adding another coat.
Apply additional thin coats until you reach your desired coverage. Remember, several thin coats create a stronger, smoother, more beautiful finish than one heavy coat.
Remove and mark any hardware from your piece. Clean thoroughly with Clean Slate to remove all dirt, wax, silicone, furniture polish, oils, and grease. Repair any cracks or holes with wood filler. A clean surface allows One Step Paint to bond properly and creates a longer-lasting finish.
Allow approximately 1 hour of dry time between coats. Once your final coat is dry, your piece is ready to enjoy as-is with its soft, chalky matte finish, or protect it further with Matte Sealer, Light Wax, or Dark Wax.
One Step Paint works beautifully on wood, cabinetry, laminate, melamine, Formica, glass, resin, concrete, metal, stone, and previously painted furniture. It's also the only Amy Howard At Home paint suitable for fabric and upholstery.

One Step Paint is a chalk-style, calcium-carbonate paint designed to create antique beauty without stripping, sanding, priming, or sealing. Simply clean your surface, apply the paint, and let it dry. It delivers rich color and a flat matte finish that can be left as-is or layered with waxes, glazes, milk paint, or specialty finishes.
One Step Paint adheres beautifully to a wide variety of surfaces including wood, laminate, melamine, Formica, glass, resin, concrete, iron, stone, and previously painted furniture. It’s also suitable for outdoor furniture and décor when properly sealed for exterior use.
Yes—One Step Paint is the only Amy Howard at Home paint formulated for upholstery and fabric. Find tutorials on our blog or on our YouTube channel.
Sealing is not required for decorative pieces, but for furniture that will receive daily use—such as tables, chairs, cabinets, or upholstery—we recommend sealing with wax or another appropriate topcoat to protect the finish and extend durability.
One Step Paint contains essential oils, giving it a pleasant, low-odor scent compared to traditional paints. This makes it more enjoyable to use indoors and in smaller spaces.
Yes. One Step Paint is a water-based, low-VOC decorative paint, making it a more environmentally friendly choice for home DIY projects and indoor furniture refinishing.
Surface prep is simple—just clean thoroughly with a degreaser like Clean Slate to remove dirt, oils, or residue. No stripping, sanding, or priming is required in most cases unless repairing damage or creating a distressed finish.
One Step Paint is incredibly versatile and is often used as a base layer for milk paint finishes, waxed surfaces, stenciling, glazing, cracked patina looks, gilding, and layered Old-World furniture techniques. It’s ideal for creating everything from subtle patina to dramatic heirloom-style pieces.
While both are easy-to-use, all-in-one paints, they’re designed for different finishes and surfaces.
One Step Paint offers a flat matte, chalky finish ideal for vintage and distressed looks. It’s great for furniture, décor, and even upholstery (the only paint in our line safe for fabric). It's best when you want to layer, wax, or create a more aged, textured appearance.
Miracle Paint, on the other hand, dries to a smooth, satin finish that’s self-sealing and ultra-durable—perfect for high-traffic surfaces like cabinets, doors, and countertops. It’s self-leveling and designed to minimize brush strokes, making it ideal for a sleek, modern look that holds up beautifully over time.
I painted my sectional with One Step paint mixed with fabric softener and water per Amy’s instructions on her YouTube videos. Sectional was a hand-me-down beige color with stains. Did the ottoman first to get my technique and make sure I loved it. Then did the rest. Sanded in between coats and applied Mind Your Own Beeswax and it is wonderful!!!
I ordered a small can to try out chalk paint. I love it and the color that I chose, Lady Singing The Blues! I have a second nightstand and a 3 drawer chest to refinish so I am now ordering more paint. Can't think of any downside, the paint flows smoothly and covers well. I am going to finish with tung oil but this nightstand shows the natural oak top and 2 coats of Amy Howard's chalk paint.
Store owner replied:
thanks so much for being a great customer and thanks for sharing!
The color is beautiful. It goes on smoothly. I had to touch up several ares that2 coats didn’t cover as well and it was a bit dull finish. When we moved into my grandsons bedroom it seemed to scuff easily. I worry a little about being in a 6yo bedroom
Amy z Howard paint is wonderful but The paint chip color, Lady Sings the Blues, was much darker than the actual paint color. I had to reorder what I hope is the darkest blue color.
I love working with Amy Howard’s paint. I have a few projects and this is my 2nd buffet. It’s finished in the Lady Singing the Blues One Step paint and English Walnut stain on the top. Finished in the clear wax and dark wax on the body and matte sealer on the top. Boiled hardware in vinegar water and used the copper wax to complete the look. If you want a more bronzy or brassy look, don’t boil the hardware. Love the products and will be posting more as I do more. Thank you!
Loved using this paint. Truly it needed only one coat. When I opened the can, I was concerned because the color was bright blue, but it dried quickly and is the perfect shade of NAVY. Would definitely order again. Thank you!
I lived the speed and efficiency of this paint! I was able to clean the dresser and apply 2 coats within a half day! The color is a deep velvety matte that looks gorgeous! I’m so pleased with this product! And I still have 1/2 a can of paint so I’m painting a bookshelf next!
The paint glides on smoothly and is easy to work. I used a synthetic brush and have minimal brush strokes. It is in the cool 60s right now so I will retest when the temperatures warm into the 110-120s range. Paint reacts very differently in warmer temperatures in my dry region. I do prefer the smell to regular paint which normally makes me feel sick to my stomach. Not this paint, it reminds me of bourbon vanilla. Several weeks later, the scent lingers and even my dog stops to smell the wood sample I painted. Thank you for making a paint that does not make my stomach turn and head ache for days. The scent is lovely and soft and does not have a chemical smell. For myself with numerous allergies including chemical sensitivities it is a miracle paint. Please don’t be confused, I believe they have a miracle paint too, but this review is for the one step paint.
The color is beautiful although not what I was expecting. Lady Singing the Blues is a moody blue with a hint of green and yellow undertones. I know pictures don’t capture the color exactly, but I do want to point out that it darkens as it dries. Notice the difference between the color in the bottle and the painted dry trim. I was anticipating a dark deep navy. I’m grateful they sell 4 oz samples to test the color and paint. A great size if you want to paint a large swatch or if you were painting a large room and want to see how it appears from different angles and walls.
The customer support was prompt, polite, and informative.
I’m excited for the color cards to be released so I can order one. They are very helpful when you can’t see the paint colors in person and need to get a job done quickly.
Overall I am very satisfied and will definitely use this paint line in the future when the right project and color collides. Well done on curating a fabulous paint line!
Used the blue for the base to update this older desk and I love it!! The paint goes on much brighter but it dries this dark navy blue. I’m trying to find any other surface in my house to use it again. The paint is smooth, the finish is very matte which I love. No sanding, priming required. Just a bit of wax at the end.
Obsessed with the transformation of our built ins using this paint. I was originally worried the color would not be dark enough after seeing the color in the can/when it initially is applied but it definitely darkens as it dries and becomes a gorgeous navy. We have transformed several things in our home using the One Step Paint including our kitchen cabinets and have 0 complaints. It’s incredible easy to use and has held up well without chipping. Can’t wait for our next project using this paint!
I absolutely love this color. At first when the paint is wet the color looks different but when it dried, you could really appreciate the beautiful tones. I stripped the top and legs of this peace and used AH gel stain hazel mahogany.
I bought this color to use on a hand built jewelry chest (weighs 54 lbs empty). I am recovering from recent back surgery but once I'm "set free" it's my first project!! I can't wait to get started. You won't believe the transformation that is coming!!!
Absolutely loved this paint. It didn’t smell harsh and dried pretty quick. I got two 32 oz cans and it was more then enough to do two nightstands and a dresser.
I will definitely be buying this pint for my next project
This is such a rich blue color. Lady Singing the Blues One Step. Love it! I used the Kensington Black Gel Stain with Glazed Over to finish it. Such great products for beautiful finishes.
