About One Step Paint
One Step Paint is our premium, water-based chalk-style furniture paint that transforms furniture, fabric, and everything in between. No stripping, no sanding, no priming. It dries to a soft, chalky matte finish that's perfect for vintage, distressed, layered, and Old World looks. While decorative pieces don't require sealing, we recommend adding a wax or sealer on high-use items like dining tables, chairs, and cabinets to protect against everyday wear.
Remove and mark any hardware from your piece. Clean thoroughly with Clean Slate to remove all dirt, wax, silicone, furniture polish, oils, and grease. Repair any cracks or holes with wood filler. A clean surface allows One Step Paint to bond properly and creates a longer-lasting finish.
Allow approximately 1 hour of dry time between coats. Once your final coat is dry, your piece is ready to enjoy as-is with its soft, chalky matte finish, or protect it further with Matte Sealer, Light Wax, or Dark Wax.
One Step Paint works beautifully on wood, cabinetry, laminate, melamine, Formica, glass, resin, concrete, metal, stone, and previously painted furniture. It's also the only Amy Howard At Home paint suitable for fabric and upholstery.

One Step Paint is a chalk-style, calcium-carbonate paint designed to create antique beauty without stripping, sanding, priming, or sealing. Simply clean your surface, apply the paint, and let it dry. It delivers rich color and a flat matte finish that can be left as-is or layered with waxes, glazes, milk paint, or specialty finishes.
One Step Paint adheres beautifully to a wide variety of surfaces including wood, laminate, melamine, Formica, glass, resin, concrete, iron, stone, and previously painted furniture. It’s also suitable for outdoor furniture and décor when properly sealed for exterior use.
Yes—One Step Paint is the only Amy Howard at Home paint formulated for upholstery and fabric. Find tutorials on our blog or on our YouTube channel.
Sealing is not required for decorative pieces, but for furniture that will receive daily use—such as tables, chairs, cabinets, or upholstery—we recommend sealing with wax or another appropriate topcoat to protect the finish and extend durability.
One Step Paint contains essential oils, giving it a pleasant, low-odor scent compared to traditional paints. This makes it more enjoyable to use indoors and in smaller spaces.
Yes. One Step Paint is a water-based, low-VOC decorative paint, making it a more environmentally friendly choice for home DIY projects and indoor furniture refinishing.
Surface prep is simple—just clean thoroughly with a degreaser like Clean Slate to remove dirt, oils, or residue. No stripping, sanding, or priming is required in most cases unless repairing damage or creating a distressed finish.
One Step Paint is incredibly versatile and is often used as a base layer for milk paint finishes, waxed surfaces, stenciling, glazing, cracked patina looks, gilding, and layered Old-World furniture techniques. It’s ideal for creating everything from subtle patina to dramatic heirloom-style pieces.
While both are easy-to-use, all-in-one paints, they’re designed for different finishes and surfaces.
One Step Paint offers a flat matte, chalky finish ideal for vintage and distressed looks. It’s great for furniture, décor, and even upholstery (the only paint in our line safe for fabric). It's best when you want to layer, wax, or create a more aged, textured appearance.
Miracle Paint, on the other hand, dries to a smooth, satin finish that’s self-sealing and ultra-durable—perfect for high-traffic surfaces like cabinets, doors, and countertops. It’s self-leveling and designed to minimize brush strokes, making it ideal for a sleek, modern look that holds up beautifully over time.

This is the before, and after. My furniture was black and very heavy feeling and dated. Used this amazing furniture paint which amazingly one container-the larger size I think it’s a quart , covered two nightstands and large dresser. Because it was black and I was painting it a light gray I did use two coats of paint. Very easy to use, but it does dry fast so you have to paint quickly to avoid brush marks. But it covered great. I did not sand before however I did wipe the furniture down with ammonia prior to painting.

The paint worked great! I have a dresser and two nightstands that are solid, heavy wood and were stained black. I always wanted to refinish them, but I thought I would have to completely sand every nook and cranny, which felt like a bigger job than I was ready to tackle. My mom recommended this paint after using it on a piece of furniture so I thought I would give it a try. I bought the larger size thinking that would be enough to do both of the nightstands and if they turned out good, I would order another quart for the dresser. The nightstands turned out great. You do have to go fast because the paint dries really quickly and will get a little rough if you don’t move fast enough. But don’t worry if that happens just use the light sander between coats. I had a little less than half a container left and decided I would start on the dresser thinking I could maybe get one coat done. The paint is so good that I was actually able to finish the dresser with two full coats of paint.. it is definitely a more Matte/flat finish then I was expecting so I ended up buying some men wax clearcoat and did one round of that.

I was a little nervous to try this paint as a 1-step process. It was great! I forgot to buy the furniture cleaner, so I wiped it down before painting. It truly was a 1 cost process with zero issues. I bought new hardware and completely transformed an old dresser for under $60. I did but the paint swatch booklet for future projects, too.

It was a very daring move on my part. I had just said.. upon waking one morning “Go for it.. “. I’m about to order more Ballet White.. to fuss with it a bit more.. but first I need to decide on my countertop color:) For now .. for this small studio space I’m sprucing up… I’m pleased. Thanks Amy!

My cabinet needed a refresh, so I used Amy Howard Luxe Grey One Step paint and I love how it turned out! This is a beautiful light grey color which looks lovely next to my white walls. It was very easy to paint using one step. I decided to keep it simple and used the clear wax to finish it off.

This is after ONE coat. It was stained and had a stripe down the middle. I imagine that the next coat will make it perfect!

Luxe Grey is beautiful. Covers nicely! I did 2 coats, and 2 coats of polycrylic Matte finish that I had already purchased for another project. Even used my old hardware! Transformed my old oak cabinetry to a modern update. Affordably too I might add!

I am officially obsessed with the One Step Paint from Amy Howard! My daughter needed a bed for her college apartment. This one has great lines, but it was dark brown and that wasn’t the look she wanted. So, thank you Amy Howard! It turned out fantastic, we couldn’t be happier!

I really love the cracked patina finish I achieved using Luxe Grey one step paint as one of the layers. I was practising my finishes from one of the Old World Finishes in Amy's tutorial. I used an old vase I brought from a 2nd hand shop.

Well this was my first experience with one step paint. It is so very different from my home made chalk paint! So creamy and after getting used to it , I will have a hard time going back to my old product. Wow, the scent is Devine. Even after waxing the pieces the scent stays. I have used lavender scented clear wax before expecting the scent to linger but it did not. I am amazed at the high end details in each product. Amy has thought of everything as far as aesthetics, the feel of things, just everything. Bravo Amy Howard. And I’m so thrilled with your free tutorials, I am learning so much! Thank you and God bless you for sharing your knowledge with us.

Luxe Grey is a beautiful, very light true grey. It almost looks white until you have it up against something actually white, and then the grey really pops. It took 2 coats to paint over my dark cherry wood furniture and I love how it turned out.

Ready and easy to use. I did feel like it was expensive for what I probably could have bought elsewhere.

The color was perfect, I had a bumpy start using it on laminate, but once I got the clean slate, the paint went on much smoother.

I have been using your paint for 4 years and have furnished my entire kitchen in old furniture with Amy Howard chalk paint. Always got my Luxe Grey paint from Ace hardware but not all stores mix your paint any longer. I did find one Ace Hardware that attempted to mix it for me and the color came out orange😂 It certainly was not the Luxe Grey that I needed. They were very upset but couldn't help. I am so happy that I was able to order paint online. Mary Ellen

The Luxe Grey and Nottaway Blue were used on this cabinet, which was previously pine green with a natural wood top and base. The paint coverage was excellent. I did two coats to ensure the darker original colors did not bleed through, but could have gotten away with one coat. Now I plan to apply clear wax and dark wax for an aged look. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
