Paint Calculators
Calculation is based on one coat. Most paint projects require two coats for the best coverage.
This is where you can add some additional info, such as how many coats/quart.
Bauhaus Buff is a vibrant white, just a shade softer than Ballet White, and it stands as one of our most sought-after color choices.
About One Step Paint
One Step Paint is our premium, water-based chalk-style furniture paint that transforms furniture, fabric, and everything in between. No stripping, no sanding, no priming. It dries to a soft, chalky matte finish that's perfect for vintage, distressed, layered, and Old World looks. While decorative pieces don't require sealing, we recommend adding a wax or sealer on high-use items like dining tables, chairs, and cabinets to protect against everyday wear.
- Clean thoroughly with Clean Slate to remove all dirt, wax, silicone, furniture polish, oils, and grease.
- Using a brush, roller, or sprayer, apply your first thin, even coat of One Step Paint. Use long, clean strokes, painting with the grain, and avoid applying too much paint at once.
- Allow the first coat to dry completely, about 1 hour, before adding another coat.
- Apply additional thin coats until you reach your desired coverage. Remember, several thin coats create a stronger, smoother, more beautiful finish than one heavy coat.
- Once dry, enjoy your soft, chalky matte finish as-is, or protect high-use pieces with Matte Sealer, Light Wax, or Dark Wax.
Remove and mark any hardware from your piece. Clean thoroughly with Clean Slate to remove all dirt, wax, silicone, furniture polish, oils, and grease. Repair any cracks or holes with wood filler. A clean surface allows One Step Paint to bond properly and creates a longer-lasting finish.
Allow approximately 1 hour of dry time between coats. Once your final coat is dry, your piece is ready to enjoy as-is with its soft, chalky matte finish, or protect it further with Matte Sealer, Light Wax, or Dark Wax.
One Step Paint works beautifully on wood, cabinetry, laminate, melamine, Formica, glass, resin, concrete, metal, stone, and previously painted furniture. It's also the only Amy Howard At Home paint suitable for fabric and upholstery.

One Step Paint FAQ
One Step Paint is a chalk-style, calcium-carbonate paint designed to create antique beauty without stripping, sanding, priming, or sealing. Simply clean your surface, apply the paint, and let it dry. It delivers rich color and a flat matte finish that can be left as-is or layered with waxes, glazes, milk paint, or specialty finishes.
One Step Paint adheres beautifully to a wide variety of surfaces including wood, laminate, melamine, Formica, glass, resin, concrete, iron, stone, and previously painted furniture. It’s also suitable for outdoor furniture and décor when properly sealed for exterior use.
Yes—One Step Paint is the only Amy Howard at Home paint formulated for upholstery and fabric. Find tutorials on our blog or on our YouTube channel.
Sealing is not required for decorative pieces, but for furniture that will receive daily use—such as tables, chairs, cabinets, or upholstery—we recommend sealing with wax or another appropriate topcoat to protect the finish and extend durability.
One Step Paint contains essential oils, giving it a pleasant, low-odor scent compared to traditional paints. This makes it more enjoyable to use indoors and in smaller spaces.
Yes. One Step Paint is a water-based, low-VOC decorative paint, making it a more environmentally friendly choice for home DIY projects and indoor furniture refinishing.
Surface prep is simple—just clean thoroughly with a degreaser like Clean Slate to remove dirt, oils, or residue. No stripping, sanding, or priming is required in most cases unless repairing damage or creating a distressed finish.
One Step Paint is incredibly versatile and is often used as a base layer for milk paint finishes, waxed surfaces, stenciling, glazing, cracked patina looks, gilding, and layered Old-World furniture techniques. It’s ideal for creating everything from subtle patina to dramatic heirloom-style pieces.
While both are easy-to-use, all-in-one paints, they’re designed for different finishes and surfaces.
One Step Paint offers a flat matte, chalky finish ideal for vintage and distressed looks. It’s great for furniture, décor, and even upholstery (the only paint in our line safe for fabric). It's best when you want to layer, wax, or create a more aged, textured appearance.
Miracle Paint, on the other hand, dries to a smooth, satin finish that’s self-sealing and ultra-durable—perfect for high-traffic surfaces like cabinets, doors, and countertops. It’s self-leveling and designed to minimize brush strokes, making it ideal for a sleek, modern look that holds up beautifully over time.

I used One Step Bauhaus Buff as my primer coat on this old wooden frame. I then applied cracked gesso and a custom milk paint of pompeii gray and noir. The final step was antiquing with your fantastic Antiquing Glaze with a cotton free cloth and OOOO steel wool followed by a light unbuffed coat of Mind Your Own Beeswax.

Love this one step paint! Just know that I painted over pine stained wood and it took 4 coats to make the surface even. I was torn with which color white to go with and happy I chose this, it has more of a black hue compared to the other options (which had yellow undertones). I had to order 5 quarts to complete this large queen size canopy bed. No sanding or prepping, plus the finish is so soft but very durable! I used an edging tool and grey chalk paint then sanded to distress the bed and the entire look turned out beautiful! Plus the smell of the paint is so nice, it doesn’t smell like typical water based wall paint, it had a bit of a clean sweet smell! I am so thrilled that I chose this paint for this project, I don’t believe any other paint would compare or give me the confidence that the finish will last a lifetime like the one step paint!

It was not a one step paint, I ended up getting better coverage from a paint from Lowe's, and it was cheaper too.

First time trying the One Step Paint. I used it as the base for the milk paint which was also a first. This frame and picture was $2 at a ReStore (cheap plastic). I plan to tone down the border a little bit and add a little gold leaf for highlights. The paint is really smooth and has great coverage. Thanks for a great product!

Posted before and after pics of a bedroom set that I had professionally refinished years ago. I wanted a glazed honey color (it ended up being orange!), but I lived with it. This paint is fantastic! I did two coats of Bauhaus Buff, a coat of Cracked Patina, and another coat of Bauhaus. Easy to use! Love it!

This paint is great and very full coverage! I love that I didn’t have to do more than a couple coats over the very dark stained wood this piece used to be. No bleed-through from the stain at all. Durable but still easily distress-able. I used the sealing wax as well and it’s so smooth it’s almost got a soft touch to it. This was my first time using Amy Howard products & I am really impressed!

I used the Bauhaus Buff, One Step Paint, to scumble our chimney, which was once on the outside of our home, but now part of our new dining room. Love it. Was so easy to work with, and was so happy to be able to refer to the YouTube video using the scumbling technique.

This is my go to paint I use as my base coat for all of my pieces I want to do a French country antique finish on. I am a fine artist so I use it to finish my own frames, as well as for just about anything I want that French country look for.

I used bauhaus buff one step paint to refinish this old silver plate tray. Then added the Parisian script mesh stencil to decorate it. It is the best paint for so many things! I love it and I have never used stencils that were so easy to apply! Thanks Amy!!! Your products are the best by far….

I use Bauhouse Buff on all my craft projects. Raw wood and MDF is very porous and this One Step Paint gives the surface a perfect beginning. The photo is of a little chest painted with Bouhouse Buff. It is a finished project with Mind Your Own Beeswax as a final step. A little organization station with some craft supplies.
